Why a Cloud Sync is not a real Backup
With the increased use of ransomware (malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid) over the past few years it has become one of the top threats to data loss today.
Cloud syncing such as iCloud and Google Drive is not a true data backup because there is no disconnect between your compromised device and the cloud sync, if your computer is compromised it will still sync your compromised data with your cloud data, compromising that too. The purpose of Cloud storage is to increase your overall storage if you have limited internal storage or have multiple devices you want access to the same files, Online Backups are to replace your data.
In the case of malicious software and ransomeware if your device syncs to iCloud or Google drive, the malicious software will compromise all your data. However if you use a proper backup such as CrashPlan or Backupify this creates an independent and secure copy of your data that allows you to restore your data should it become compromised, This is the key difference between Google drive and iCloud; “online storage / cloud” vs CrashPlan or Backupify an “online backup”
