DMARC Reporting, What is it?

DMARC Reporting, What is it?

DMARC reporting is a feature within the broader DMARC email security protocol. Imagine your email system as your home mailbox. Normally, anyone can drop a letter in there, and you'd have to manually sort through to figure out what's important, what's a regular advertisement, and what might be a scam.

DMARC acts like a sort of vigilant mail carrier. It looks at every piece of mail (or email, in this case) and checks if it's genuinely from who it claims to be from. It does this by examining the "return address" and other identifying features of the mail, comparing them with a list of approved senders that you've set up beforehand. If an email doesn't pass the test, it gets marked as suspicious or doesn't get delivered at all.

The "reporting" aspect of DMARC is like getting a daily or weekly summary from this vigilant mail carrier. It tells you how many pieces of mail came in, how many were marked suspicious, and other details. This way, you can spot any unusual patterns and update your settings to make your email even more secure.

Benefits for Businesses of Any Size:
  1. Reduced Fraud: By checking that emails are genuinely from your company, you reduce the risk of scams and phishing attacks on your employees and customers.
  2. Improved Trust: When people know that emails from your domain are secure, they're more likely to trust communications from you, which can enhance your business reputation.
  3. Better Email Delivery: Using DMARC can help ensure that your legitimate emails don't get mistakenly marked as spam, so important communications reach their intended recipients.
  4. Data Insights: The reports allow you to see who is sending email on your behalf, which can be especially useful for larger organizations with multiple departments or for small businesses using third-party services for things like newsletters.
  5. Flexibility: DMARC is scalable, meaning it can be effectively used by businesses of any size, from a solo entrepreneur to a large corporation.
So, in a nutshell, DMARC reporting is a tool that helps keep your email secure, builds trust with your customers and partners, and provides you with valuable insights into your email traffic.

What we do to monitor/review your DMARC
We provide a service that, after we have access to your DNS, can give us a live reporting of any/all emails that are coming from and going to your domain and can see if there are any issues with said mail. It will also allow us to see any gaps in your security, in regards to email, as well as possible solutions to prevent anyone from trying to take advantage of said gaps.

We are also able to see if there are any validation issues with your DKIM, SPF or DMARC and how we can potentially resolve a failed validation for you.
